POVEGLIANO (TV): A victory of willpower and determination. Driven by the holy fire of redemption, Alessandro Romele and Sergio Meris dominate the 6th stage of the Giro Next Gen (166 km from Pergine Valsugana to Povegliano) and bring the 13th win of the season to Team Colpack Ballan CSB.
This is Romele’s 3rd win this year (he previously triumphed in the GP della Liberazione and the Reda di Faenza), and an undisputed success for team manager Antonio Bevilacqua, president Beppe Colleoni and the Ballan and D’aprile families.
The team's victory is completed by a podium place (3rd) for Sergio Meris who, with Romele and Depretto (2nd), took off after the Valico della Fricca descent, taking advantage of a slowdown in the group. Their advantage quickly became decisive and the trio were unstoppable all the way to Povegliano.
STATEMENTS: These are the words of the athletes right after crossing the finish line: “It was spectacular", said the winner; "we relived all the excitement of Riolo and Rome. My mind was calm and my legs in great form. It was essential to be able to interpret the circumstances, handle the ups and downs and know I could count on two team mates who rode very strongly. We knew we could do it."
Romele tells us how the breakaway came about. "It was an instinctive move. A lightning-quick understanding with Sergio Meris, who was positioning himself to overtake. We knew right away it was the right thing to do, because the group was reduced to a minimum and there was a certain tiredness around. We pulled ahead, despite the head wind coming up the valley."
