Bike seat clamps
Bike seat clamps
Seat clamps are circular clamps used to tighten the seat tube, secure the seat post and adjust its height.
Seat clamps are usually made of a lightweight and strong alloy, like aluminium. During assembly, it is important to tighten the seat clamp enough to secure the seat tube without overtightening it. Overtightening can damage the clamping system, especially for screw clamps.
Seat clamps: quick-release vs screw clamps
There are two types of seat clamp: quick-release and screw.
Screw clamps are adjusted by tightening or loosening the locking screw, which requires an Allen key, screwdriver or wrench. This system is safe and durable.
Quick-release seat clamps have a lever that can be raised manually to loosen the lock, reposition and re-secure the seat tube to the desired height, and retighten the lock by lowering the lever. This system is used to adjust seat height and remove or replace the seat quickly with no need for tools.
How to choose the seat clamp
To choose a seat clamp, measure the seat tube’s outer diameter. If your bike has an aluminium frame like most urban bikes and you use it for everyday riding, you may prefer a quick-release seat clamp.
However, if you have a carbon bike, or use it with weight, or for long rides and on uneven terrain, you might want to consider a screw clamp.
